Between April and June 2026, the state logistics operator handled 667,978 domestic parcels—a 549.2% jump from the 102,890 items processed between January and March.

On paper, the Communications Authority of Kenya’s (CA) latest sector report presents the picture of a legacy state enterprise pivoting to capture East Africa’s e-commerce boom. The reality is administrative, not operational.

The surge was driven primarily by administrative clearing: the lifting of an operational embargo on Express Mail Service (EMS) items, paired with the clearing of backlogged inventory through last-mile platform aggregators like TAZ Technologies’ Tap-A-Delivery. When regulatory blockages clear, processing backlogs creates brief statistical surges.

Looking past the quarterly rebound reveals a clearer picture of structural contraction:

Posta Kenya: The Core Disconnection
(Full-Year 2024/25 vs 2025/26 Performance)

Domestic Letters (Millions)
2024/25 ████████████████████ 1.94m
2025/26 ██████ 0.58m (-70.2%)

Domestic Parcels (Millions)
2024/25 ███████████████ 1.49m
2025/26 ██████████ 0.99m (-33.2%)

Across the entire 2025/26 financial year, Posta handled 993,090 domestic parcels—a 33.2% decline from the 1.49 million items processed in 2024/25. The second-quarter surge was not an operational turnaround; it was a brief interruption in a long-term downward trend.

The collapse of Posta’s core paper network continues. Domestic letter volumes fell 70.2% year-on-year, dropping from 1.94 million in 2024/25 to 577,694 in 2025/26. In the April–June quarter, Posta delivered just 146,935 domestic letters.

The digitisation of tax filings, utility billing, corporate invoicing, and government gazettes has eliminated the physical mail revenue that historically underwrote Posta’s brick-and-mortar footprint across Kenya’s 47 counties.

As the traditional postal business contracts, private sector operators are capturing the domestic courier market. Private operators processed 3.37 million domestic parcels in the fourth quarter alone—over five times Posta’s quarterly volume—and finished the financial year with 14.42 million parcels, a 9.3% increase over the 13.19 million delivered in 2024/25.

Kenya Domestic Parcel Market Share (FY 2025/26)

Private Couriers : ██████████████████████████████████ 14.42m (93.5%)
Posta Kenya : ██ 0.99m (6.5%)

Posta now commands just 6.5% of Kenya’s domestic parcel volume. Private operators have scaled up by building flexible distribution networks, integrating directly with merchant platforms, and offering automated routing.

Posta’s response has focused on outsourcing the last mile. Its partnership with TAZ Technologies connects post offices to independent taxi drivers and gig-economy couriers through an API layer.

While this asset-light model avoids capital expenditure, it positions Posta as a low-margin collection node rather than an integrated logistics operator. As private logistics revenues grew to KES 6.70bn across the industry, growth was concentrated in agile domestic networks, while legacy international handling fell 7.7% to KES 4.69bn.

Posta Kenya faces a strategic challenge: a physical real estate network designed for physical mail, competing in a market that demands digital tracking, real-time routing, and fast doorstep delivery. Clearing administrative embargos provides brief volume spikes, but it does not alter the underlying market dynamics.

A 549% quarterly surge in domestic parcel volumes obscures the structural decline of Kenya’s state courier, which now controls less than 7% of a domestic logistics market shifted […]

[109
["post-6999","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-newsbeat
["GET
