Outside the local clinic, expectant mothers wait under sparse shade, facing a stark structural reality: without electricity, routine medical imaging is impossible here, and the nearest regional hospital lies hours away over treacherous roads.

That long-standing barrier begins to crumble today as a 23-student engineering crew from the Netherlands pulls up to the facility. Their vehicle, dubbed Stella Juva, carries an unconventional promise—it is not designed to rush critically ill patients to distant urban medical centres, but to bring high-powered diagnostics and independent clean energy directly to remote doorsteps.

Developed by Solar Team Eindhoven from Eindhoven University of Technology in partnership with Amref Health Africa, the 1,350-kilogram prototype is undergoing live field tests across an 800-kilometre (500-mile) circuit. Its mission is to demonstrate that off-grid mobile clinics can function entirely on clean power, even under severe environmental conditions.

A mobile clinic powered entirely by light

As Stella Juva parks in Mosiro, its crew triggers an automatic expansion of the vehicle’s custom solar array. Roof-mounted panels complement fold-out side units, nearly doubling the energy collection footprint under the equatorial sun.

Inside the climate-controlled cabin sits an array of power-hungry diagnostic instruments, including a digital X-ray machine, an ultrasound scanner, an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and specialized refrigeration units designed to preserve temperature-sensitive vaccines.

“We are all very positively surprised,” says Isabella Wanningen, a 22-year-old student of computer science and engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology and member of Solar Team Eindhoven, speaking to CNN during the trials. Stella Juva “reacted even better than we had expected.”

Wanningen outlines the design ethos underpinning the project, noting that the goal centers on total electrical self-sufficiency. “We wanted to build something that isn’t dependent on grid infrastructure at all,” she says. “The idea is that wherever the sun shines, the vehicle can provide both transport and immediate power for essential equipment.”

Initial technical readouts from the field trial reveal a crucial thermodynamic milestone: while stationary, Stella Juva collects significantly more solar energy than it consumes, even while running its entire suite of diagnostic devices simultaneously.

“When we parked up in Mosiro, the panels unfolded and we saw the energy levels climbing even while everything inside was running,” Wanningen notes. “It demonstrated that you don’t need to sacrifice diagnostic capability just because you are operating in a remote area.”

Although team members refrain from running scans on active clinical patients during this initial technical run, engineers and health officials calculate that a two-day stop generates enough surplus power to serve approximately 200 patients.

“There are solar panels on its roof. They generate not only enough electricity for driving, but also for powering the medical equipment on the inside,” explains Solar Team Eindhoven spokesperson Yarno Basten.

Overcoming the rural healthcare divide

Across Sub-Saharan Africa, roughly one-third of the population resides more than two hours away from basic medical care. In rural regions like Narok, that delay often yields high rates of preventable maternal and infant mortality.

“The solar ambulance would be quite useful in these locations,” says John Kutna, a programme manager for Amref Health Africa, highlighting how chronic power deficits in places like Mosiro disproportionately affect pregnant women.

Kutna points out that the lack of local diagnostic tools forces families to balance economic survival against preventative healthcare. “When a woman in a remote village needs an ultrasound, she often has to weigh the cost of long-distance transport against her daily family needs,” Kutna explains. “Bringing that capability directly to the village changes the entire care dynamic.”

Public health administrators on the ground see immediate operational advantages in eliminating reliance on fuel logistics. Geoffrey Sadera, a project manager at Amref Health Africa, views the concept as a potential turning point for regional healthcare outreach.

“Now that we have seen what Stella Juva can do in practice, we see enormous potential for remote communities. This could truly be a gamechanger,” Sadera says. “For example, during a single outreach, 30 to 40 pregnant women could receive an ultrasound in their own community. And Narok is not alone: one third of Kenya’s counties face similar challenges and high levels of maternal and child mortality. If we could deploy Stella Juva in these areas, the potential impact could be enormous: we could identify risks earlier, intervene sooner, and ultimately save lives.”

Local health leaders emphasize that decentralised generation provides a realistic path forward where grid expansion stalls.

“Solar energy is everywhere,” notes Dr. Kennedy Wakoli, a family and reproductive health expert at Amref Health Africa. “The country is moving towards renewable energy, and this will be very significant in terms of how we adopt it in the health sector.”

Wakoli believes the successful Kenyan trials should spur broader institutional investment across the continent. “We cannot rely solely on central grid expansion to solve healthcare access,” Wakoli remarks. “Solutions like this show that localized, clean power can bridge the gap much faster if we invest in scaling them.”

From university concept to public health asset

Stella Juva represents the latest iteration in a long line of student-driven solar engineering breakthroughs. Since 2013, Solar Team Eindhoven has developed energy-positive vehicles, including the Stella Vita solar campervan and the Stella Terra off-road vehicle.

The student initiative already boasts a track record of commercial spillover. Lightyear, an electric vehicle company founded by five Solar Team Eindhoven alumni, recently revealed a production-bound demonstration EV utilising integrated solar technology developed alongside Japanese automotive giant Nissan.

Following its African trial, Stella Juva returns to the Netherlands, but its engineering team views the Kenya run as proof that off-grid solar mobility is ready for practical deployment.

“We hope to inspire industry and society to use innovative technologies like Stella Juva to tackle some societal problems,” Basten says.

Basten stresses that student initiatives frequently act as the front line for industrial adoption. “Our role as a student team is to prove what is technically possible today,” Basten says. “If a team of students can build a fully solar-powered mobile clinic and drive it across Kenya, there is no reason major manufacturers cannot take these principles and produce them at scale.”

That sentiment finds strong backing among team leadership as they look toward commercial partnerships.

“It is really great for the team to see the potential of Stella Juva in practice,” says team manager Mathijs van Gerven. “Not only to drive sustainably, but also to be able to provide fully independent care. Especially in remote areas where energy is often scarce, this can make all the difference.”

Van Gerven adds that the team is actively seeking partners to take the prototype into serial production: “As students, we have shown what is possible when technology and social impact come together. With Stella Juva, we would like to encourage others to think further about sustainable healthcare. We are open to parties who want to explore together how this innovation could be taken forward.”

A 500-mile test run across Kenya’s rugged terrain proves off-grid, solar-powered mobile health clinics can deliver critical care to communities living hours away from electricity and hospitals.
